The Impact of the Recent Elections and Legislative Updates on Employee Benefit, Health and Retirement Plans: A Professional’s Perspective

Program Notes:

Political changes resulting from November’s elections will continue to have a major effect on health, welfare and retirement plans. The impact of these changes will affect public policy, business decisions made by plan sponsors and the individuals who participate in these programs in both the short and long term. Plan Sponsors need to understand the immediate impact of the current political climate and also need to project the long-term impacts on their various benefit plans.

Please join us on February 7 for a discussion about how the legislative landscape may impact on your employer sponsored plans. Julie Burbank from Trucker Huss will focus on health and welfare issues, including a discussion of health care reform. Bob Holcomb from JP Morgan will discuss retirement plans and the current policy climate.

This is an important program for all benefits professionals. Health Care Reform is real, it is going to occur and you need to prepare for this specific event. How are the ongoing political decisions on issues such as the debt ceiling limit and possible spending cuts going to impact your retirement plan benefits? Retirement Reform is going to occur, and our speakers will share what they see as potential changes for these programs and their thoughts for how you can position your employer sponsored plans. These topics and more will be discussed during our sessions.

Moderator: Karen Casillas, CAPTRUST Our speakers: Julie Burbank is a Director at the law firm of Trucker Huss, APC. Ms. Burbank practices in all areas of employee benefits and ERISA compliance. She focuses her practice on health & welfare plans, Section 125 cafeteria plans, short-term and long-term disability plans (including California Voluntary Disability Plans), 401(k) plans and qualified retirement plans. She also represents clients in IRS and DOL investigations. Since 2010, she has been helping employers understand their obligations under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and has made numerous presentations on health care reform. Ms. Burbank was named by Corporate Counsel Magazine as one of “The Best Lawyers in America” in employee benefits law for the past six consecutive years. Robert Holcomb is Executive Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs for J.P. Morgan Retirement Plan Services. In this role, Mr. Holcomb oversees retirement policy efforts on behalf of J.P. Morgan Asset Management. In addition, he interprets pension-related legislation and regulations, consults with clients and internal partners on legislative and regulatory issues, and represents J.P. Morgan in advocacy groups. He currently serves on the executive board of the American Benefits Council (ABC) and works with other industry advocacy groups Prior to joining J.P. Morgan in 1991, Mr. Holcomb was employee benefit counsel for a national bank. A frequent speaker at industry conferences, Mr. Holcomb has been in the retirement business for more than 25 years serving in client management, operations, technical consulting and sales support roles. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law
